What Influences My Teaching and My Practice?
Hi, I’m Charli Sklar, a yoga teacher based in North West London. My journey into yoga began during a particularly hectic chapter of my life. Balancing a demanding office job with evening and weekend accountancy studies left little room for anything else, including a social life. Yoga became my refuge—a space to breathe, find clarity, and connect to a much-needed sense of inner peace.
After qualifying as an accountant, I took a leap and decided to travel the world. It was during this time that I completed an intensive yoga teacher training in India. Upon returning to the UK and Finance work again I knew in my heart that there was more to life than the work I was doing, I felt unfulfilled and that life had no meaning. I started to teach yoga and it soon became apparent that this was my calling. I started to teach more regularly from January 2013 and have been teaching full time since 2016.
My teaching style has evolved over the years, rooted in ashtanga yoga and now heavily influenced by vinyasa flow. In my earlier days, I practiced ashtanga daily, often starting my mornings with mysore practice before heading into a busy day of management accounting. However, after sustaining two collarbone injuries in 2019, I transitioned to practicing mainly vinyasa flow, which offers me the creative freedom to tailor my practice to how my body feels each day. I love designing thoughtful sequences and teaching classes that explore different themes, body parts, or movement patterns.
In addition to yoga, I have a passion for cycling and love pushing myself to achieve longer and longer distances. You’ll often find me doing laps around Regent’s Park or cycling as far north from NW3 as my little legs can take me. Cycling brings me a sense of adventure and challenge that perfectly complements my yoga practice.
In addition to vinyasa, my yin practice provides a much-needed counterbalance to a physically demanding teaching schedule and my cycling training routine. My injuries also sparked a deeper interest in myofascial release, which I integrate into my classes and workshops to help students release tension and improve mobility.
Since my initial training in India in 2012, I’ve continued to deepen my knowledge with additional trainings led by world-renowned teachers such as Tiffany Cruikshank, Sarah Powers, Kristin Campbell, and celebrated UK teachers Mimi Kuo-Deemer, Bridget Woods Kramer, and Norman Blair.
Yoga has transformed my life, and it’s my passion to share that transformation with others, helping them find strength, flexibility, and peace—both on and off the mat.
